Sportsman’s Donor Club Challenge Blood Drive: March 27 and 28!
The seventh-annual Sportsman’s Donor Club Challenge Blood Drive will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, March 27-28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Medical Center.
The Challenge is a friendly competition between 17 organizations within Ocean Reef Club and the Key Largo Angler’s Club. Each competitor names one of these organizations to represent their donation, and the organization with the most donated blood will be the winner of this year’s Challenge and will be recognized on a plaque at the Medical Center.
Jay Holmes, pictured at right with his canine companion Rochester, serves as honorary chairman of the Challenge. Past chairman of the Medical Center, he began donating blood as an Eagle Scout in high school. Jay is still an avid blood donor who has donated more than 15 gallons in the past 60 years! As a lifelong blood donor, he is encouraging (b)you to donate blood for the Challenge and help others in their time of need.
Why do we need to donate blood?
As blood cannot be manufactured outside the body and has a limited shelf life, it is necessary that our blood supply be replenished by generous blood donors continually. Your blood is needed!
Who needs your donation?
People needing the most blood are undergoing surgery or being treated for cancer, blood disorders and accidents.
What about blood type?
Your inherited blood type is one of eight types. Your type matters when used for blood transfusions. All types are needed.
Can I donate?
There are some restrictions based on your health history and/or medications, but most people are eligible and the medical staff will be able to determine if you are a candidate.
What if I am not available those dates?
Donations can also be made at Kmart in Key Largo from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26, and donations will be accepted at the Homestead Donation Center. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Nancy Brundage, OneBlood Area Representative, via email or by calling 305-797-7028.
Help someone who needs blood by joining the Sportsman’s Donor Club Challenge … and know that your precious gift can be life-saving.
