Following a muted 2021 event thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Fun-Raiser was back in full swing for its 40th anniversary. There were events for everyone including tennis, golf (9- or 18-hole), pickleball, and trying your luck at a chance to win up to $10,000 in cash ... all for a good cause: the Ocean Reef Medical Center Foundation!
Click on the invitation cover at right to download a copy of the 2022 Invitation and Registration packet, which includes details of all events, days and times, along with information about the ever-popular raffle. Below that you'll find the official 2022 Fun-Raiser program with even more details, sponsors and more.
We want to give a big shout-out to this year's Fun-Raiser chairs, Kathy and John Weiland, along with co-chairs Lori and Brad Young. We also want to thank our sponsor, Baptist Health South Florida.
Fun-Raiser: Forty Years to Now
The golf event that eventually became today's Fun-Raiser began in 1983 with one chairman, a few committee helpers and Medical Center staff. They raised $9,084. That first chairman was George Edwards, followed over the next few years by Clare Miller, Barbara Jacobs and John (Johnny) Campbell. By 1989 the event had grown substantially and the decision was made to have two sets of chairpersons, generally husband and wife teams, each chairing for two consecutive years for continuity.
As the Ocean Reef Medical Center Foundation was not yet in existence, the event was then known as the Medical Center at Ocean Reef Annual Golf & Auction Event. In the early years Campbell would personally take the stored sponsor signs out of the Medical Center's attic (yes, the old building had an attic and a basement), load them up and drive around to the golf courses and place them at the holes. This was an all-day task. Tennis was added as a sporting event in the 28th year. Evening festivities were held, weather permitting, on Buccaneer Island with buffet serving stations and bars sponsored and staffed by the real estate companies. The music was always lively and the air was full of anticipation for the grand finale: the golf cart auction.
The Fun-Raiser has come a long way since those early times, and it's persevered through some hard times -- notably the recent COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to bring a bit of normalcy and old-time excitement back to the event after two years of scaled-back activity. Join us!
