“My Diet Starts In January!”

Here comes the Holiday season, and overindulging is common. That leftover Thanksgiving pumpkin pie and other delectables are probably calling your name. While sharing a festive dinner is a cherished tradition, it often leads to overeating or overindulging in alcohol. This can be especially challenging for diabetics when faced with so many tempting food choices.

Here are a few proactive tips to help avoid overeating:

  1. Don’t skip breakfast or lunch throughout the day to “save-up” for dinner, and stay hydrated so you don’t mistake thirst for hunger.
  2. Start with smaller portions — you can always go back for seconds. Is a smaller plate available? That can be helpful when filling your plate.
  3. Prioritize your favorites and skip your least favorites to save on calories.
  4. Eat slowly and give your system time to recognize fullness cues.
  5. Be mindful of how much alcohol you are consuming. When conversation is flowing, it’s easier to indulge.

Avoid taking a nap or laying down after dinner. Instead take a walk to help with digestion. If you suffer from GERD or other digestive issues, this is especially important. Lying down after a big meal can exacerbate acid reflux.

With just a little moderation you can fully enjoy the festivities and good food during this holiday season, and your health will thank you for it.
