“My Diet Starts In January!”

Here comes the Holiday season, and overindulging is common. That leftover Thanksgiving pumpkin pie and other delectables are probably calling your name. While sharing a festive dinner is a cherished tradition, it often leads to overeating or overindulging in alcohol. This can be especially challenging for diabetics when faced with so many tempting food choices.
Here are a few proactive tips to help avoid overeating:
- Don’t skip breakfast or lunch throughout the day to “save-up” for dinner, and stay hydrated so you don’t mistake thirst for hunger.
- Start with smaller portions — you can always go back for seconds. Is a smaller plate available? That can be helpful when filling your plate.
- Prioritize your favorites and skip your least favorites to save on calories.
- Eat slowly and give your system time to recognize fullness cues.
- Be mindful of how much alcohol you are consuming. When conversation is flowing, it’s easier to indulge.
Avoid taking a nap or laying down after dinner. Instead take a walk to help with digestion. If you suffer from GERD or other digestive issues, this is especially important. Lying down after a big meal can exacerbate acid reflux.
With just a little moderation you can fully enjoy the festivities and good food during this holiday season, and your health will thank you for it.
