The Medical Center Lecture Series’ first lecture of 2026 will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Cultural Center and will feature two speakers from the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Eduardo Alfonso, M.D., Director of Bascom Palmer, will give a brief introduction about the Institute followed by Byron L. Lam, M.D., whose lecture is entitled, “The Eyes are a Window to the Brain: The Link Between Vision and Neurological Decline.”
Dr. Alfonso is Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and holder of the Kathleen and Stanley Glaser Chair at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is known for his clinical and research expertise in eye diseases.
Dr. Lam is a Neuro-Ophthalmologist and his roles include Professor of Ophthalmology; Dr. Mark J. Daily Chair in Ophthalmology; Director of Dr. Mark J. Daily Inherited Retinal Disease Research Center; Medical Director, Neuro-Ophthalmology Service; and Medical Director, Clinical Research.
Dr. Lam is an active clinical scientist. His clinical practice focuses on patients with neuro-ophthalmology conditions or inherited retinal disease. His broad background in neuro-ophthalmology and hereditary retinal degenerations has enabled him to collaborate with basic and clinical scientists resulting in many successful translational projects.
Bascom Palmer has been ranked No. 1 Best in Ophthalmology by U.S. News & World Report for the 24th time since the publication began surveying U.S. physicians for its annual rankings 35 years ago.
