October is in the Pink

October is National Breast Cancer Month. Schedule your annual mammogram and support breast cancer awareness through volunteering, fundraising, or joining events. Far too many of us have friends, family or acquaintances who have been touched by this devastating disease. In 2025, it’s estimated among women in the U.S. there will be:

  • 316,950 new cases of invasive breast cancer. This includes new cases of primary breast cancer but not breast cancer recurrences. Invasive breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells from inside the milk ducts or lobules break out into nearby breast tissue.
  • 59,080 new cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive breast cancer.
  • 42,170 breast cancer deaths.

Yearly mammograms and performing breast self-examinations are important steps in helping to catch breast cancers early. Many types of breast cancers can be felt upon self-examination. Disregard myths such as: “If the lump is painful, it isn’t breast cancer;” or, “If you can feel a smooth lump that moves freely, it’s not breast cancer.” Although most lumps are benign, any lump or unusual mass that can be felt through the skin should be checked by a healthcare professional.

Virus season is on the horizon. Remember to get your flu vaccine soon.
