Doctor prescribes emotional health and exercise for the heart

Marc Gillinov, M.D., cardiac surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic Heart and Vascular Institute in Ohio, is set to give the second lecture in the Medical Center Lecture Series about the number one health threat, heart disease. Information about heart health abounds, filling web pages and shelves at bookstores. But much of this information is incorrect. Separating myth from truth is challenging, but can be lifesaving. Sharing key points from a book due out in early 2012, Dr. Gillinov will discuss the relationships between the heart and three primary factors: emotional health, exercise and red wine.

Operating a healthcare facility in a seasonal environment results in an annual deficit, no matter how well the Medical Center is operated. Forty percent of our deficit is underwritten with annual funds raised through Ocean Reef Club Check-Off, All Charities Gala, Medical Center Golf and Tennis event and Boutique d’ Reef. The balance of the shortfall is covered by the Medical Center Foundation endowment. This is where we need your help.

An expert on breast health is to give the opening lecture in the seventh annual Medical Center Lecture Series, and it’s a topic relevant to both men and women. According to Dr. Robert DerHagopian, a breast surgeon and medical director of the Baptist Health Breast Center in Miami, 12 percent of the general population is affected by breast cancer. The good news is, then, 88 percent of us are not.
