Medical Center News Current Articles | Archives | Search Monday, February 13, 2012 "Real Men" attend Men's Night Out!   Five dozen men gathered to hear Dr. John Mekras of Miami Urology speak on Monday, February 13, at our very first “Men’s Night Out” sponsored by the Medical Center.  Dr. Mekras’s engaging, often humorous, and informal style was well received. While the men asked numerous questions, Dr. Mekras volleyed topic after topic about men’s health concerns, diseases and preventative care.  Discussed were the importance of regular screenings for prostate cancer past the age of 50 (age 40 if there is a family history), and the various types of cancer treatments, including i-125 radio-seed implants for low grade prostate cancer, use of Brachytherapy in radiation, gamma knife and other advanced technologies.    Other topics were; bladder cancer, incontinence and the relation of dietary interaction, erectile dysfunction and the biological effects of Viagra, (Viagra originally started out as a heart medication) prostate function, and surgical techniques using hi-tech robotics.  Didn’t attend? Ever wonder how many nighttime trips to the bathroom are too many? Dr. Mekras suggests once or twice is an acceptable number. More often could signal a health concern and definitely interferes with loss of quality sleep. This and other valuable tidbits were relayed in a relaxed and lively atmosphere that encouraged participation by the attendees.  Dr. Mekras is a board certified urologist and surgeon with over 20 years of experience.
