For women: Everything you want to know

By Barbara Olcott

For the second Ladies Night Out lecture, set for Thursday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m. at the Medical Center, Dr Elizabeth Updike will present “Everything you want to know about menopause and sex after age 53.” Ladies Night Out is presented by the Medical Center Foundation.

Dr. Updike is an assistant clinical professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Miami and a practicing physician in Miami. She graduated from the University of Georgia (B.A. in Psychology with honors), University of Miami School of Medicine, and did residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Michigan State University.

Our first Ladies Night Out Dec. 8, organized by the Medical Center's educational committee headed by Judy Brand, featured dermatologist Dr. Debra Price, a visiting specialist at the Medical Center. This premier event -- an evening of women coming together to discuss women's issues in an environment conducive to honest discussion -- was a huge success with more than 100 in attendance for cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and  lively and open communication.

Dr. Updike’s lecture will share information about HRT (hormone replacement therapy, the pros and cons), Urogyn issues (bladder issues), recommended screening studies (pap smears, sonograms, etc.), views on female aging in general (sex after 53), how diet and exercise relate to GYN issues and most importantly, answers to specific questions that attendees may personally have.

We encourage women to come with questions. Some will feel comfortable raising a hand. For those who are not, we will have anonymous cards that attendees may fill out to give to Dr. Updike during the question and answer part of the evening.

In the meantime, please send any thoughts about possible topics of discussion that could be covered during the evening to Barbara Olcott (Bpolcott@me.com) or Marcy Altman (marcy@mcor.org) and we will add them to the list of areas of concern for our very special group of women at Ocean Reef. Call Marcy, Medical Center Foundation administrator, at 367-7777 to RSVP.

The Medical Center at Ocean Reef is able to provide year-round special services because of the Medical Center Foundation Founders Society. To support the Founders Society or find out more, please call 367-4224.
